Bailer Hill Rd to Fully Close on Tues. Oct 14 as Project Enters Final Construction Phase

SJC Public Works News Posted on October 09, 2025

SAN JUAN COUNTY, WA. October 9, 2025—The Douglas/Bailer Hill Road Improvements Project is entering the final stages. A road closure will occur west of False Bay Road and east of Hawk Ln at mile marker 4.4 for approximately 16 hours on Tuesday, October 14 to install a culvert. A partial lane closure will begin at 8:00 am to help accommodate school bus routes, with the full closure beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 1:00 a.m. During this time, through traffic will not be permitted, and a detour will be in place, marked by reader boards and signage.

Road Closure Information

  • What: Bailer Hill Rd will be closed for approximately 16 hours. Through traffic will not be permitted, and a detour will be in place, marked by reader boards and signage.
  • Where: The point of closure will be west of False Bay Road and east of Hawk Ln at mile marker 4.4.
  • When: Tuesday, October 14, starting at 8:00 am there will be a partial, single-lane closure to help accommodate school bus routes. The road will be fully closed beginning at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 1:00 a.m.
  • Why: This full road closure will help reduce overall construction time as crews install a cross culvert to manage storm water drainage from False Bay Creek. Installing a culvert enables the road design to include a shallower ditch on the south side of the road, supporting user safety and reducing the overall length of guard rails.

Future work remaining includes installation of guard rails and reducing the ditch depth along sections of Bailer Hill Road.  During this work, the road will remain open to through traffic with possible flagger-controlled traffic delays. All work is anticipated to be complete this fall.

In addition, please remember to drive slowly around active construction zones: Final Bailer Hill map

  • For their safety: if you are around an active construction zone, obey flaggers and posted traffic signs.
  • For your safety: excessive speeds may kick up loose rock into oncoming traffic.
  • It’s your road: construction can move more quickly and safely when vehicle speeds are reduced.

The Public Works Department will continue to provide updates as the project moves forward. All related materials can be found on the County’s website: https://www.sanjuancountywa.gov/278/Current-Projects
